CLEVELAND, OH- The Cleveland State Vikings women's swimming and diving team knew going into the weekend that bouncing back Saturday at home after a late meet on the road would be a challenge.
Fortunately for CSU, they rose to that challenge taking down both Niagara University (195-48) and Gannon University (189-48).
Head Coach Wally Morton knew that having a second meet at home less than 24 hours after taking on top flight competition in the Ohio State tri-meet on the road Friday night would be difficult, but he was extremely happy with the way the team responded and ended the weekend on a high note.
"We swam unbelievably well under the circumstances, we improved all of our times from last night," said Morton on the team's effort today." It was a busy weekend, it was a grueling weekend, we're beat up but we're hanging in their tough."
Multiple swimmers on the women's side were able to embody that toughness and put forth impressive efforts in the home meet.
This week's Horizon League `Swimmer of the Week' Joanna Olsson continued her strong performances in the early season for CSU, bringing home wins in both the 200 freestyle (1:55.15), and 200 butterfly (2:08.30). She also teamed up with Alexandra Johansson, Alice Sommerville, and Gretchen Hestley to bring home first place in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:56.02.
Sommerville was also a three time winner herself, taking home victories in both the 200 breaststroke (2:22.74 to win by seven seconds) and 50 freestyle (24.32) to go along with the relay win.
Senior Jamie Puls had one of her best meets of the season for the Vikings, with one victory and three top three finishes. Puls teamed up with Johansson, Hestley, and Christine Kopacko to take a victory in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:32.44.
She was also able to bring home a third place finish in the 50 freestyle (24.78) and second place finish in the 100 freestyle (53.55) for CSU.
The Vikings will be looking to keep those results coming next Saturday as they head to Oxford, Ohio to take on the University of Miami (Ohio) at 1:00 p.m.
