EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Cleveland State men's tennis team had two doubles tandems post victories on the second day of the ITA Midwest Regional, with both teams advancing to the Round of 32. The Viking duos that are still alive in regional play are Ali Shabib/Niklas Jonsson and Jorg van der Vloet/Jay Jones.

"I was really proud of our doubles play today, we were able to pick up two wins in the opening round and hopefully we can add to that win total tomorrow afternoon," interim assistant coachFrank Polito said. "Ali and Niklas had a great win over a seeded team to start things off today, while Jorg and Jay also had a great match to pick up the second doubles win for us."

Shabib and Jonsson, who entered the regional with a 10-1 record this season, defeated a seeded team in their opening round match to advance to the round of 32. The duo earned a hard-fought 9-8 (5) victory over a tandem from Marquette and will now face a Michigan team in the next round.

Jones and van der Vloet defeated a Horizon League opponent in a tandem from UIC in their first round match, earning an 8-3 win to advance to the round of 32 where they will face a team from Illinois.

van der Vloet was CSU's lone representative in the main singles draw this weekend, dropping a hard-fought 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (6) match to Farris Gosea of Illinois in the opening round. Matt Ford was also in action today in the final round of the qualifying singles bracket, falling to Nick Montoya of Notre Dame (6-1, 6-1).

"Jorg had a tough break in his first round match today, falling in a three-set thriller. It was his best singles match that I have seen all year, and he was able to keep his focus and really stick to the game plan throughout the match," Polito said. "Matt (Ford) had a great tournament for us despite his loss today. He had two great matches yesterday and unfortunately just ran out of gas in today's contest."

van der Vloet will now play in a consolation match tomorrow (Saturday, Oct. 20) morning, while the two doubles teams that are still alive will begin action at 3:00 p.m.
