DePaul - CSU Results
CHICAGO, Ill. - The Cleveland State women's tennis team opened the spring portion of the 2012 schedule Saturday, as the Vikings fell at DePaul, 7-0. The loss is the first of the season for CSU, while the Blue Demons even out at 1-1 on the season.
"Today's match was a huge improvement from the last time that we played this DePaul team, but I didn't think we pushed them as far as we would have liked to," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "We found a lot of good things to take note of and work on over the next two weeks so that we are able to come out stronger when we face IPFW and Michigan State."
DePaul swept the doubles matches, earning the first point of the day. The Blue Demons posted an 8-3 victory over Maria Lazaris and Catrine Bjerrehus at No. 1 doubles; an 8-4 win over Alex Power and Alex Bush at No. 2 and an 8-4 victory over Kara Sherwood and Nicole Janek at No. 3.
The Blue Demons continued their dominance, sweeping all six singles matches Saturday afternoon. Lazaris, Bjerrehus and Sherwood started at the top of the lineup against DePaul, Lazaris falling to Jasmin Kling at No. 1 singles by a score of 6-3, 6-1; Bjerrehus falling to Patricia Fargas at No. 2 (7-5, 6-1) and Sherwood falling to Gia McKnight (6-3, 6-3) at No. 3.
Power, Janek and Bush rounded out the lineup for CSU, playing at the No. 4, 5 and 6 positions, respectively. Power fell to DePaul's Kelsey Lawson by a score of 6-1, 6-2, while Janek fell to Rebeca Mitrea (6-1, 6-3) and Bush fell to Neumann (6-1, 6-1).
"When we return to competition in two weeks we will have a big challenge ahead of us, in both IPFW and Michigan State," Etzkin said. "We now have some goals to work towards and hopefully we will be able to get wins out of both matches."
The Vikings return to action in two weeks when they travel to IPFW for a dual match on Friday, February 3 and to Michigan State for a 2:00 p.m. match on Saturday, February 4.
