EVANSTON, Ill. - Day two of the TYR Invitational, hosted by Northwestern University, was highlighted by a win from diver Josh Gonzalez and strong swims from Berry Thompson, Justin Kermack and Nathan Grant that helped Cleveland State head into tomorrow in third place.

With 404 points, the Vikings are only behind Missouri State (624) and Northwestern (619).

"This team has competed as much at an invitational as any team I can remember," head coach Wally Morton said. "We have raced our student-athletes in traditional events, but also put them in different situations and they've responded very well. This is a meet and we want to win, but it's also part of our training for later in the season. I'm so impressed with how the team is holding up and I know this will benefit us later in the season."

Gonzalez, who claimed the title on the 1-meter board yesterday, won the 3-meter diving event with a 335.30, a new career-high on that board.

"Josh just had a spectacular meet," Morton said. "What we like so much about him is his consistency. He brings it every day and his confidence is growing. We're really pleased with his progress."

Thompson, a winner in the 50 free yesterday, took third in the 100 fly with a 50.16.

Kermack was fourth in the 400 IM, covering that distance in 4:00.67.

Grant was fifth in the 100 breast (56.65), just ahead of teammate Brian Ferro who placed sixth with a 58.34.

The quartet of Grant, Thompson, Jon Querciagrossa and Graham Thoresen helped CSU achieve its best relay finish of the day, a third place in the 800 free relay (6:52.43).

In the 200 medley relay, Thompson and Grant hooked up with Justin Hill and Alex Lewis to place fourth (1:32.75).

Day three - the final day - will begin tomorrow at 10 a.m. EST at the Norris Aquatics Center. Real time results are available by visiting http://www.fitrec.northwestern.edu/classes/aquatics/meets/.
