EVANSTON, Ill. - Day two of the TYR Invitational was much like the first day in that records fell, relay teams demonstrated the depth of talent on the team and the Cleveland State women's swimming and diving team ended the day in fourth place at a meet that features schools from BCS conferences.
"This team has competed as much at an invitational as any team I can remember," head coach Wally Morton said. "We have raced our student-athletes in traditional events, but also put them in different situations and they've responded very well. This is a meet and we want to win, but it's also part of our training for later in the season. I'm so impressed with how the team is holding up and I know this will benefit us later in the season."
After two days, Northwestern (567) and Illinois (445) of the Big 10 and Iowa State (407) of the Big 12 were the only teams to finish ahead of Cleveland State, who finished the day with 350 points and fourth in the eight-team field.
A day after swimming the fastest 200 IM time in program history, Joanna Olsson highlighted the second day by breaking her own school and Horizon League record in the 400 IM. She was narrowly touched out on Saturday, but her time of 4:19.57 was a NCAA Championships B-cut time and was quicker than her previous record of 4:19.76 set last season.
Alice Sommerville won the 100 fly with a time of 55.17. She also placed second in the 100 breast with a 1:02.68, a B-cut time and a new school record.
Sommerville's only other race was another victory.
After winning the 400 medley relay (3:44.73) yesterday, Sommerville and the Vikings shuffled the lineup for the 200 medley relay and came away victorious.
Alexandra Johansson, Sommerville, Carys Behn and Christine Kopacko touched in 1:42.82 to best the rest of the field.
Behn also placed fourth in the 200 free with a 1:51.25. Johansson was fourth in the 100 back, covering the distance in 56.81.
Senior Kacey Cummings placed sixth in the 1-meter diving event with a 253.20.
Day three will begin tomorrow at 10 a.m. EST at the Norris Aquatics Center. Real time results are available by visiting http://www.fitrec.northwestern.edu/classes/aquatics/meets/.
