CLEVELAND, Ohio - Just as they did on Friday, the Cleveland State women's swimming and diving team won 11 of 13 events to earn a pair of victories on Saturday (Nov. 12) afternoon.
Cleveland State beat league foe Valparaiso 173-56 to earn its third Horizon League win of the season and second of the weekend. CSU also defeated St. Bonaventure, 141-96 in its return to the Robert F. Busbey Natatorium, a place where the Vikings haven't swam competitively since Oct. 22.
The Vikings got off to a quick start in the 3-meter diving event. Senior Kacey Cummings took first with a 227.85, and Kathleen Chandler earned a 218.17. Alex DiMasso was third with a 210.67 and Liz Victor came in at 202.42.
CSU closed out the diving events with a one-two finish in the 1-meter event. Cummings took the low board with a 228.97 and DiMasso earned a 214.20.
Cleveland State won the first race of the day as its quartet of Alexandra Johansson, Allison Pallija, Alice Sommerville and Gretchen Hestley touched with a time of 3:57.21 in the 400 medley relay.
Ashley Rossi went out and recorded Cleveland State's first individual race victory of the day, winning a tightly-contested 1,000 free. Rossi was clocked at 10:54.76, just ahead of St. Bonaventure's Alexandra Paz who touched in 10:54.70. Amanda Pallija (11:02.12) and Erin Jajtner (11:08.87) were third and fourth, respectively, to give CSU three of the top four finishers.
Carys Behn claimed victory in the 200 free with a time that was 3.36 seconds better than the next closest competitor. Behn touched in 1:53.93, ahead of St. Bonaventure's Rachel Bull who came in at 1:57.29.
Behn also beat Bull in the 500 free as the Viking senior touched in 5:09.86.
Alice Sommerville won a hotly-contested 50 free. The CSU junior recorded a 24.18, while St. Bonaventure's Ivanna Smimova and Jeanette Dietrich touched second and third, respectively. CSU's Christine Kopacko was clocked at 24.90, making the top four finishers separated by just .72 seconds.
Sommerville also was the quickest in the 200 fly (2:07.36), nearly two seconds closer than the next closest competitor.
Joanna Olsson earned her first victory of the day in the 200 IM (2:09.03). Hestley placed third in that event with a 2:11.66. Olsson earned another title in the 200 back, swimming away with a 2:07.69. She was also the first Viking to finish in the 200 breast with a 2:25.53, a time that placed her third.
St. Bonaventure's Ivanna Smimova won the 100 free (53.21), but Kopacko (53.40) and Johannson (53.50) were second and third, respectively.
The Vikings closed the meet by taking the 400 free relay as Carys Behn, Christine Kopacko, Jamie Puls and Alexandra Johansson covered the distance in 3:34.28.
Cleveland State will be in action next weekend, competing at the TYR Invitational hosted by Northwestern University. The three-day event begins on Friday (Nov. 18) and will conclude on Sunday (Nov. 20).
