Vikings Top Duquesne, 6-1, in Season Opener

WESTLAKE, Ohio - The Cleveland State women's team put together a solid effort in its spring opener on Saturday afternoon, defeating Duquesne, 6-1, at the Paramount Tennis Club.

"I thought this was a good win for us to start the season," assistant coach Jay Tee said. "We were not as sharp as I would have liked to see us, but we competed well enough to make up for it and get the win. There were definitely some positives that we can take out of this match as we move forward this year, but there are also some things we will need to continue to work on."

The Vikings got off to a quick start, winning all three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Catrine Bjerrehus and Kara Sherwood earned an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles, while Alex Bush and Alex Power teamed for an 8-7 (9-3) win at the No. 2 position. Maria Lazaris and Mengdi Liu won at No. 3 doubles, 8-4.

"I felt like our doubles were good today," Tee said. "They were able to battle through, win some key points and secure that first point for us that gave us a lot of momentum going into singles."

Once in singles play, the Vikings clinched the match with wins in five of the six contests, including straight set wins by Power (No. 3), Bush (No. 4) and Liu (No. 5).

Liu's win improved her to 10-0 this year.

The Vikings are back in action on Sunday (Jan. 23) night when CSU heads to Ohio State for a 7:00 p.m. match.
