EVANSTON, Ill. - The men's swimming and diving team is currently in second out of five teams after finishing the first day of the Northwestern TYR Invitational on Friday (Nov. 19).

"We had real solid performances across the board," head coach Wally Morton said. "I'm very pleased with all the swimmers."

Berry Thompson led the way for the Vikings with a first place finish in the 50 free (20.54). He also helped the 200 free relay team to a second place finish (1:22.61) and the 400 medley relay squad place third (3:25.09).

Mark de Swardt took second in the 500 free (4:29.05) while Deni Gasparin placed third in the 50 breast (26.20).

Josh Gonzalez was the runner-up in the day's only diving event, the 3-meter dive, scoring 276.65 points.

CSU is in second place with a team score of 214, trailing only Northwestern who is in first with 354 points. Behind Cleveland State are North Dakota (176.5), Kenyon (166.5) and fellow Horizon League member UIC (134).

"Our athletes are swimming in more events than they would at the Horizon League Championship, so this will really be a challenge to see how we hold up over three days," Morton said. "Right now we are off to a very good start."

The Vikings will continue competing at the Northwestern TYR Invitational with events all day tomorrow (Nov. 20).
