ROCKY RIVER, Ohio - The Cleveland State men's tennis team opened its spring home schedule with a 5-2 setback to Xavier on Saturday afternoon at River Oaks Racquet Club.

CSU fell to 1-1 this season, while Xavier improved to 2-2.

"I thought Xavier played tough and we have to give them credit for winning," assistant coach Jay Tee said. "I thought they were more aggressive during the key points and that was the difference. We have to come out with a better mindset and ready to play tomorrow."

The Musketeers took a 1-0 lead in the match by winning two of the three doubles contests. The only CSU squad to earn a win was sophomore Yannick Goossens and junior Chris Klepatz who claimed an 8-3 win at the No. 3 slot.

"I thought Xavier winning the doubles point was a huge boost for them," Tee said. "They really seized our home court advantage and the momentum and carried it over to the singles."

In singles play, Xavier clinched the win by taking four of the six contests.

Goossens and senior Ryan Hamning picked up wins for the Vikings, both in straight sets.

Goossens defeated Richard Caneles, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 2 singles, while Hamning dealt Patrick Bandy a 6-3, 6-4 loss at No. 3 singles.

The Vikings are back in action on Sunday (Jan. 31) when they host two matches at River Oaks Racquet Club. CSU will take on Duquesne at 2:00 p.m. and Robert Morris at 6:00 p.m.
