Evanston, Ill. - Jakub Dobies led the Vikings through day one of the TYR Invitational, putting CSU in fourth place going into the rest of the meet. The Vikings have 155 points, behind Michigan State, Northwestern and Kenyon.
"We still have a long way to go with the meet, but so far the men are putting out great performances," head coach Wally Morton said. "We did well during the first day of competition and now we just need to continue that into the rest of the meet. Both Mark and Jakub had great swims for us today and should only get better through the weekend."
Dobies was the only winner for the Vikings, with his first place finish coming in the 50 breast when he touched in a time of 25.09. He was also part of the fourth place 400 medley relay, that finished in 3:24.47, teaming with Todd Winchell, Stephen Grove and Berry Thompson.
The 50 free was one of the best races for the Vikings, with three swimmers receiving points during the event. Thompson once again broke 21 seconds in the 50 free, swimming a time of 20.89 which was good enough for a second place finish. Grove placed 11th in 21.07 while Keith Everhart swam a 21.27 and finished in 15th place.
Mark deSwart, Graham Thoresen and Pierre De Waal all placed in the top-10 in the 500 free, making it the strongest event for CSU during day one. deSwardt led the group with a second place finish, touching in a time of 4:29.34 just one second behind the first place finisher. Thoresen placed sixth for the Vikings, recording a time of 4:35.10 while De Waal finished three tenths of a second behind him in seventh (4:35.42).
The team of Grove, Everhart, Thompson and Justin Hill recorded a time of 1:24.34 in the 200 free relay, good enough for a fifth place finish.
The Vikings will continue the TYR Invitational tomorrow, with prelims beginning at 11:00 a.m. EDT and finals starting at 6:00 p.m. EDT.
