Cleveland, Ohio - Joanna Olsson set another program record in the 200 fly for the Cleveland State women's swimming and diving team as they swept Niagara, St. Bonaventure and Valparaiso in today's meet. The Vikings topped Niagara 174-69, St. Bonaventure 146-92 and Valparaiso 189-41. The win over St. Bonaventure marks the first time the women's team has beat the Bonnies over the past decade.
"We had a good solid performance by the women's squad today," head coach Wally Morton said. "The results are definitely a product of the hard work and focus that the team is putting in during training. We finally have the team healthy and all of them in a shape where they can perform at their best. If they take care of things in practice then the meets will take care of themselves."
Olsson led the Vikings with three individual victories, besting her previous record in the 200 fly with a time of 2:04.57. She also cruised to a first place finish in the 1,000 free (10:25.88) and the 200 IM (2:07.97), beating out the second place finisher by more than seven seconds in each race.
Kacey Cummings, Carys Behn and Alice Sommerville each recorded two individual victories for CSU in both swimming and diving events. Cummings won both the 1- and 3-meter boards with 244.60 and 232.75 points respectively.
Behn touched first in the 200 (1:53.05) and 500 free (5:01.63), recording her best dual meet swim in the 500 free, while Sommerville won the 50 (23.89) and 100 free (52.58) as the Vikings swept the freestyle events.
Michelle Ferro placed first in the 200 breast with a time of 2:28.10 and placed second in the 200 back (2:08.93).
The team of Jamie Puls, Emily Splain, Whitney Hickey and Behn won the 400 free relay in a time of 3:38.13, the lone relay victory for the Vikings.
Emily Simard recorded the fastest split time in the 400 medley relay with her finish of 1:07.10.
"The women are off to a great start with their historic win against St. Bonaventure which is always one of the top teams in the A-10," Morton said. "The win today was a total team effort and our depth is really starting to show with multiple swimmers placing in most events."
The CSU squad is starting to show their depth as Splain, Liz Victor and Rachel Arzadon each posted second place finishes, in events where the Vikings had already won the race.
"I am looking forward to facing some great competition over the next two weeks," Morton said. "It will really show us where we are compared to some tough competition and show us what we need to work on in order to finish out the year strong."
The Vikings will return to action when they travel to Evanston, Ill. for the Northwestern University Invitational from Friday (Nov. 20) to Sunday (Nov. 22).
