South Bend, Indiana - The Cleveland State women's swimming and diving team started their 2009-10 season tonight, when they took part in the Dennis Stark Relays on the campus of the University of Notre Dame. The Vikings finished third in five events, ending the meet in fifth place since they did not take the entire team to the meet.

Participating in the relays for CSU was sophomore Carys Behn and freshmen Alice Sommerville, Jamie Puls, Michelle Ferro and Joanna Olsson.

"We did what our training suggested we would do in the first meet of the season," assistant coach Andrew Hancock said. "We are fine with the results since this is the first time that many of them have raced since March. Since we have been out of racing for so long we were slow to get going, but started to put in good quality swims towards the end of the meet."

The first third place finish came in the 400 medley relay, when Olsson, Sommerville, Ferro and Puls teamed up to finish with a time of 4:03.02. The other third place finishes came in the 400 individual medley relay, 1,000 free relay, 200 medley relay and the 400 free relay.

Behn and Olsson teamed up for the 1,000 free relay recording a time of 10:18.85. Behn and Olsson teamed up once again with Puls and Ferro for the 400 free relay, finishing third in 3:38.69.

"We have some things that we need to work on for the next meet when we have a full team swimming," Hancock said. "It was good to get out and swim, and put our hard work to use in a real meet."

The Vikings return to action next Saturday (Oct. 17) when the team travels to Saint Francis (PA) for a dual meet starting at 1:00 p.m.
