Cleveland, Ohio - The Cleveland State women's swimming and diving team won 11 out of the 13 events in today's meet against Green Bay. Four CSU swimmers won eight individual events for the Vikings along with winning the 400 free relay. Despite all of the victories, CSU came up short, 123-120 to Green Bay.
"This was a close loss for us today, we took the most successful team in the Horizon League down to the last relay and that shows a lot for our team," head coach Wally Morton said. "The quality swimmers really stepped up for us today, winning every event except for the 200 breast and the 400 medley relay."
With over 100 CSU swimming and diving alumni watching, freshman Joanna Olsson set a new CSU record in the 200 butterfly, winning the event with a time of 2:06.44, beating out the second place finisher by more than six seconds. Olsson also touched first in the 1,000 free (10:26.60), 200 IM (2:09.05) going a perfect three-for-three in her individual events.
Freshman Alice Sommerville and sophomore Carys Behn each recorded two first place individual finishes during the meet as well as taking part in the winning 400 free relay. Sommerville's first race was the 50 free where she finished in 23.95, the third fastest time in CSU history. Her second race was the 100 free, finishing in 52.04, good enough for second place in the CSU all-time top-10. Behn won the 200 free (1:54.63) and the 500 free (5:09.62) for the Vikings.
"We got off to a slow start today, but we got stronger as the meet went on," Morton said. "The meet really went down to the last relay and we had an opportunity to win going into the last two events. The 400 relay was incredible today with Behn's come from behind finish at the end."
Both Sommerville and Behn teamed with Emily Splain and Whitney Hickey for the 400 free relay finishing first in a time of 3:35.01, just one-one hundredth of a second before the second place relay.
Michelle Ferro also posted an individual win for CSU, winning the 200 backstroke in 2:07.95 the seventh fastest time in CSU history. Ferro also took home a fourth place finish in the 200 breast (2:29.48).
Kacey Cummings recorded victories in both the 1- and 3-meter diving events for the Vikings with 247.42 and 236.70 points in each event respectively.
"It's good to get the first meet under our belts," diving coach Rich Karban said. "Kacey had a solid performance in both diving events. She especially did a great job for not diving competitively for the last five months. All in all I think everyone did a good job in the diving events today."
The women's swimming and diving team will have two full weeks of training to prepare for their next meet at Youngstown State on Friday (Nov. 6) at 5:00 p.m. The Vikings will face Canisius, Malone and Youngstown State.
