Cleveland, Ohio - The Cleveland State women's swimming team got several outstanding performances in a dual meet with St. Francis, but just missed its first victory of the year, falling 106-99 in the Robert F. Busbey Natatorium.
"We've made significant improvements and I think once we're healthy we'll be even better," head coach Wally Morton said after the meet. "The medley relay was key for us and we knew we needed to win that event to win the meet, but we just got out-touched at the end."
The Vikings kept things close throughout, winning five individual events and one relay. Several swimmers posted solid efforts, including Carys Behn who won three individual events and added her name to the All-Time Top-10 in two more events.
Behn won the 200 freestyle in 1:53.48, just missing the record of 1:53.22 set by Jen Grabski in 1999. She followed that up with a win in the 100 butterfly, swimming the fourth-best time in school history (58.92) and also won the 500 freestyle in 5:15.41.
Whitney Hickey picked up a win in the 100 freestyle (55.11), edging out teammate Kristina Nagy. Kristine Bunker posted the Vikings' other win of the day, winning the 1,000 freestyle in 10:56.65. Nagy, Kristine and Sandra Bunker and Maria Culjak paired up to win the final event of the day, the 200 freestyle relay, in 1:43.36.
"Carys was outstanding, winning three events and just missing a school record in the 200 free by a couple of tenths," Morton said. "Kristine Bunker recorded her best time by about 10 seconds in the 1,000 free and Whitney Hickey had a terrific meet as the anchor of the medley relay, and with her win in the 100 free and a second-place finish in the 50 free after getting out-touched at the wall."
Emily Splain picked up a pair of second-place finishes in the 200 freestyle and 200 backstroke. Katie Bellew also finished second in both the 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke.
The Vikings are back in action on Oct. 25 when they open the Horizon League season at Green Bay.
