CLEVELAND, Ohio - Cleveland State split six singles matches with Butler but the Bulldogs controlled doubles play as CSU lost, 4-3, Saturday at the Malaga Tennis Center.
Senior Sarah Galon defeated Butler Molly Casperson at No. 1 singles in three sets while junior Jenn Myers and Lindsay Sellers each notched victories at Nos. 4 and 5 singles to lead CSU. The match was tied 3-3 when Butler's Carrie Rachon pulled out a three-set win at No. 6 singles.
However, it was the doubles point that was the difference. Butler quickly swept doubles play, putting CSU in an early hole down 1-0.
"We didn't come out with enough energy early to win in doubles," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "We rallied and gave a good effort, but being down early really came back to hurt us."
Myers' 6-3, 7-6 (4) win over Becky Jenkins in the fourth spot makes her 6-0 in league matches heading into Sunday's finale versus. Detroit.
First serve against the Titans is set for approximately 2:00 p.m. Sunday at the Malaga Tennis Center.
