TOLEDO, Ohio - Cleveland State had its five-match winning streak snapped in a 7-0 loss at Toledo Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Vikings fall to 8-2 on the year.
The Rockets won all three doubles matches to sweep the doubles point and won all three of the contest's singles matches that went three sets. Junior Brad Groleski was edged at No. 1 singles 6-3, 6-7 (3), 10-6 while senior Dan Singer (3-6, 6-3, 10-5) and sophomore Rob West (3-6, 6-3, 10-6) also fell in three-set matches.
"We had some close matches but couldn't convert them into wins," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "Toledo had a little extra something to win the close matches."
CSU's two freshmen, Phil Orno and Ryan Hamning, each lost in straight sets. Orno lost to Jared Miller 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2 singles while Hamning fell 7-5, 6-3 at No. 3 to Chris Clark. Sophomore Steven Wipprecht also fell in straight sets in the fifth spot.
"We weren't quite as sharp today. We had some opportunities but we didn't take advantage of them," Etzkin said.
Both CSU tennis teams travel to Robert Morris Sunday (Feb. 25) for an 11:00 a.m. contest.
