Cleveland, OhioJakub Dobies won the 200 IM as well as the 200 backstroke as the Viking men's swim team downed Green Bay 132-102. The victory improves the Vikings' record to 2-0 on the season.
Dobies wasted little time in winning his races as he finished with a time of 1:58.29 in the 200 yard IM and raced to a first place finish in the 200 breaststroke (2:07.93).
"I'm very pleased with Dobies's performances," head coach Wally Morton said. "He is really working hard in practice and it is showing up in the meets."
Diver Dan Baiko also performed well as he finished first in the 1-meter (291.75) and 3-meter boards (311.75).
"Baiko is performing really well for this early in the season," Morton said. "I'm impressed with his work ethic and his desire to compete."
CSU's relay teams continued to dominate their meets as they finished first and second in the 400 yard medley relay. The relay team "A" of Zvonimir Androic, Jakub Dobies, Nedim Nisic, and Stephen Grove finished first with a time of 3:29.77, while team "B" of Ari Markle, Stef Potgieter, Sam Baribault, and Johan Norling finished with a time of 3:37.16 to place second.
"The time of 3:29.77 was an excellent time for how hard we are working them in practice," Morton said. "That time is right up there for one of the best in the conference this year."
The most exciting event of the afternoon was the 400 yard freestyle relay. On the final leg of the meet, Michael Marisco (48.14) edged out Tony Surm (48.21) to win the relay.
"That last leg was the most exciting race of the afternoon," Morton said. "It was fun to watch two great swimmers go head to head."
Zvonimir Androic also placed well for the Vikings. Androic finished first in the 200 yard backstroke (1:54.82) and finished second in the 200 yard freestyle to help the Vikings' cause.
Dave Duecker had a couple of second place finishes as he finished second in the 500 yard freestyle (4:45.89) and 1000 yard freestyle (9:50.09).
"Although he finished second in those two races," Morton said. "He went up against one of the best swimmers in the conference in Alex Hill."
In the 50-yard freestyle, Stephen Grove and Marko Milenkovic finished first and second respectively. Grove finished with a time of 21.69, while Milenkovic finished at 21.84.
Todd Winchell also finished first for the Vikings in a time of 1:43.60 in the 200 yard Freestyle.
"We've been training really hard," Morton said. "The times the swimmers are giving are really good for this time of the year. I'm pleased with their performances"
The Vikings return home on Friday (Nov. 2) to host St. Bonaventure at 6:00 p.m.
