CLEVELAND, Ohio - Senior Marianne Lionell won the 100 breast and posted a team top time in the 100 fly and junior Lesley Jones placed third in the 100 free as CSU went 0-2, falling to Duquesne, 152-48, and Xavier, 129.5-70.5, on Saturday at the Busbey Natatorium.
Lionell's winning time of 1:08.69 was just .90 seconds slower than her season-best effort at the Miami Invitational and was nearly half a second faster than Duquesne's Katie McHugh in second place.
Lionell, in her first entry this season in the 100 fly, registered the team's best effort (1:01.18). She now owns the team's top times in seven events.
"Marianne had a nice meet," head coach Mike Lehto said. "She had quality swims in the 100 fly and the 100 breast."
Jones, the only other Viking to finish in the top three in any event, placed third in the 100 free with a time of :55.82.
Juniors Alexandra Bagi and Deanna Raedel each posted season-best times, Bagi in the 200 free (2:04.53) and 100 fly (1:04.26) and Raedel in the 200 free (2:04.72).
"Deanna had her fastest times and very nice swims," Lehto said. "Alex had a nice meet as well."
The meet was CSU's first since swimming at the Miami Invitational Nov. 30-Dec. 2. The Vikings (3-8) went to Florida for a week at the beginning of January to train.
"We were anxious to see how everything was going to play out after our training trip and we weren't sure what to expect as far as times. Each person will be different depending on how they adjust."
Duquesne won the meet, routing Xavier, 144-59.
The Vikings are back in action on Friday, Jan. 26 at home against St. Francis (PA). The meet, which will be senior day for Lionell, will begin at 5:00 p.m.
