CLEVELAND, Ohio - Cleveland State came from behind to win the doubles point and then won all six singles matches to defeat Horizon League foe Youngstown State, 7-0, in the fall season finale on Saturday (Oct. 14) at the Royal Oaks Racquet Club. CSU concludes the fall portion of its schedule 3-0.
Youngstown State took an early lead in two of the three doubles matches, but the Vikings rallied to win at No. 1 doubles, 8-4, and at No. 3 doubles, 8-3. Sophomores Rob West and Steven Wipprecht trailed in the second combo spot before winning in a tie-breaker, 8-7 (2) to complete the doubles sweep.
"After falling behind, we came out strong early in doubles," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "We like setting the tone by winning the doubles point."
The singles portion of the contest wasn't in doubt for very long as the Vikings' Nos. 4-7 players won in straight sets. Junior Brad Groleski dropped the first set, 6-0, before taking the second two sets. Freshman Phil Orno also needed a third set to win at No. 3 singles.
"Youngstown played very well in singles today," Etzkin said. "They were scrappy and fought until the end. There were some close matches but we stepped up and won the big points."
Groleski, Orno and Hamning will represent CSU at the ITA Regional Tournament starting Thursday, Oct. 19 in Minneapolis. The Vikings' season resumes on Jan. 19 at Michigan State.
