St. Bonaventure, N.Y.-The Cleveland State women's tennis team cruised to a 5-2 victory over St. Bonaventure Friday afternoon in its first of three matches this weekend.
Junior Sarah Galon and sophomore Jenn Myers led the way at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, downing both of their opponents 6-0, 6-2. In similar fashion, sophomore Lindsay Sellers defeated Yolanda Callaghan at No. 4 singles 6-1, 6-1. Freshman Kristin Chamberlain showed signs of promise for the Vikings at No. 5 singles, upsetting Ana Delgado 6-4, 2-6, 10-6.
"We felt like their team improved a lot since last year especially in the middle of the lineup and were definitely competing well," said coach Brian Etzkin. "They had a lot of hard hitters and I thought we did good job of constructing points today."
CSU went 3-0 in doubles action. Galon and Morgan Ungerott continued to lead the women at No. 1 doubles, defeating Callaghan and Delgado 8-3. The No. 2 team of Chamberlain and Sellers also won their match 8-3, while Myers and Christine Vogelgesang knocked off Fosnight and Jaysingh at No. 3 doubles, 8-2.
"We played very good doubles this afternoon and got off ourselves off to a quick start," said Etzkin. "Hopefully our doubles play will be one of our strengths all season long. It was definitely nice to have earned the first four points of the day and to know that a victory was in hand for the rest of the match."
The Vikings will play next on Sunday, Jan. 29 when they host Toledo at 2:00p.m. and Robert Morris at 6:00p.m.
