Dayton, Ohio - The Vikings face some tough competition to start the spring tennis season and it showed on Saturday in their 4-3 loss to Dayton.
Hard work during the offseason paid-off for Junior Sarah Galon as she easily defeated Allysa Detroy 6-2, 6-2 in No. 1 singles. This is Galon's first career win against the Flyers.
"Since I am now playing at No. 1 singles I wanted to come into the match with a clean slate," said Galon. "I played patient and it showed in the end result."
Sophomore Jenn Myers also won big at No. 3 singles in a hard-fought 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 match against Nicole Dzubay.
"She got better and better throughout the entire match," said coach Brian Etzkin. "She became a completely different player from beginning to end."
Unfortunately the wins by Myers and Galon were not enough to pull off an upset.
"We made progress from last year but we definitely could have won this match," said coach Etzkin. "It came down to three-set matches. We won one three-set match and they won two and that was the difference."
In doubles action the Vikings came out firing, resulting in a clean sweep of all three matches. It marks the first time under coach Etzkin that Cleveland State has won the doubles point against Dayton.
"It was a great feeling to get a doubles' point off of Dayton," said Galon. "Right now we're undefeated with the doubles point for the season."
"I really would have liked to win but this is the starting point of the season and we just have to go from here," said Etzkin. Hopefully by the end of the season we'll beat teams at this level. We missed an opportunity but I'm glad we came out with a really good spirit and energy."
The Vikings will play again tomorrow when they take on Michigan State at 4:00 p.m. in East Lansing Mich.
