CLEVELAND - The Cleveland State men's swimming and diving team made things interesting in the final events in their meet against Miami (Ohio) on Friday (Oct. 28) night, but the Vikings were unable to make up the deficit as they fell, 125.5-117.5 to the Redhawks at Busbey Natatorium.

Playing to the same tune as last year's 126-117 Viking win, the meet would come down to the final event of the night. Cleveland State put up a hard charge in the 400 freestyle relay, with the team of Daniel Thomasson, Adam Wroblewski, Pieter Pelser and Bjorn Schantz claiming first, but Miami would claim second and third place to hold on to their advantage.

"I really liked the way we raced tonight," head coach Wally Morton said. "We did a great job racing them. We lost the really close races tonight, but it wasn't for a lack of effort. We really wanted to win this one."

Trailing by 16 points with six events remaining, the Vikings cut the shortage to seven thanks to back-to-back wins by Thomasson in the 100 freestyle (47.54) and by Pelser in the 200 backstroke (1:49.40). A first-place one-meter score of 314.25 by senior Thatcher Carr trimmed another point from the deficit, but a win in the 200 breaststroke by Griffin Marshall put the Redhawks ahead by 13 points with one event remaining.

The 400 medley relay team of Pelser, Marko Milenkovic, Ari Markle and Johan Norling claimed the first win of the night for the Vikings to stake them to an early advantage. Both teams flip-flopped leads over the next three events before Miami jumped out in front for good following a tough CSU disqualification in the 200 IM.

Thomasson added an additional win in the 200 freestyle (1:43.67), while Carr took top honors on the three-meter boards (335.10).

The Viking men's and women's teams go at it again Saturday (Oct. 29) when they host Canisius on Alumni Day beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Busbey Natatorium.
