Women’s Soccer Comes Up Short In 1-0 Decision At Canisius

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Cleveland State women's soccer team closed out the non-league portion of its 2018 schedule Sunday afternoon, dropping a tough 1-0 contest at Canisius. Entering Horizon League play next weekend, Cleveland State now stands at 4-4 on the year.

The Vikings had a few good looks on goal during the first half, including in the 32nd minute when Jenna Prathapa broke away from the Canisius defense and had an open shot, but the Canisius goalkeeper was in the right place at the right time to make the save and keep Cleveland State off the board.

Through the first 40 minutes of the opening frame, Stevie Holbrook had a solid defensive performance for the Vikings in goal, but in the final minutes of the half, Canisius was able to get a shot past Holbrook, gaining a 1-0 lead that they took into the halftime break.

Cleveland State had another good opportunity on goal in the opening minutes of the second half, as the Vikings were awarded a free kick right outside of the box following a Canisius foul in the 51st minute, but Grace Grant's shot went just above the crossbar to keep the score at 1-0 Canisius.

The Vikings then put some offensive pressure on the Canisius defense throughout the second half, but they were unable to find the equalizer, as the Griffs' first half goal eventually proved to be the game-winner.

The Cleveland State offense earned four corner kicks during the second frame, but despite four quality looks on goal, the Vikings were not able to put anything into the back of the net.

For the contest, Cleveland State posted a 9-5 advantage in shots, but just one of those shots was on goal for the Vikings compared to four for Canisius.

Holbrook played the first 65 minutes in goal for the Vikings, finishing with two saves, while Kendra Clarke came in for the final 25 minutes of the contest recording one save.

Next up for Cleveland State will be Horizon League play, as the Vikings host defending champion IUPUI in their #HLWSOC opener on Friday, September 14. Kickoff is slated for 7:00 p.m. at Krenzler Field.
