LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Cleveland State men's tennis team opened up play at the Louisville Invitational Friday, with Nico Mostardi and Luke Phillips both advancing to the quarterfinals of their respective singles draws.
Mostardi posted his two singles wins in the A Flight, picking up a first round victory over Simon Bustamante of Tennessee Chattanooga (6-1, 7-5) and a second round win over Middle Tennessee State's Jan Porteset (6-3, 6-4).
Phillips' 2-0 start to the weekend came in the B Flight, as he posted a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory over Lipscomb's Pedro Uribe in the opening round, and followed that up with a 6-2, 7-6 victory over Jan Jirus of Ball State in the second round.
The Vikings were also able to pick up four victories in consolation singles play, including a walkover win from William Malm in the C Flight. Joining Malm in the C Consolation Flight is Jack Santilli who earned a 7-6, 6-1 victory over Xavier's Nate Dell. Benjamin Slade picked up a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Jacob Marshall of Tennessee Chattanooga in the B Consolation Flight, while Matthew Terry earned a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Tennessee Tech's Gonzalo Garcia in the A Consolation Flight.
Overall, the Vikings went 6-0 during the second round of singles action on the first day of the Louisville Invitational.
In doubles play, all three Viking tandems dropped their opening round matches, and will now play in the consolation brackets in their respective draws.
Action at the Louisville Invitational will continue tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. with one round of doubles play and two rounds of singles action.
