AKRON, Ohio – The Cleveland State women's tennis team started the fall campaign Friday, playing one round of singles matches and one round of doubles matches at the Akron Shootout.
"For our first time out this fall I thought we competed really well in singles and doubles, obviously we still have work to do, but for this early in the season we had a good first effort," head coach Frank Polito said. "In singles, we had a couple of tough match tiebreakers that could have gone either way, and that is something that we can work on moving forward. We are playing with so many new players this season and I'm excited to just see what we can do as a team as we continue play this weekend."
Cleveland State's lone doubles win on the day came from Gaby Schoenberg and Sian Payne, as they picked up a 6-3 victory over an Akron tandem.
Spindler picked up a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Anastasiia Khokhlova of Youngstown State, marking her 45th career singles victory.
Avram's first victory in a Cleveland State uniform came in a 6-1, 6-2 decision over YSU's Lucia Zagar, while Schoenberg picked up a win over Elvira Esteo after she retired from the match.
Cleveland State will continue play at the Akron Shootout tomorrow (Saturday, September 22), with one round of singles and one round of doubles beginning at 10:00 a.m.
