Stillwater, OK- The Cleveland State Vikings' softball team (5-9) unfortunately ended their Oklahoma State Tournament on a low note Sunday, falling to the host Cowgirls 10-1 in the tournament's championship game.
Despite taking an early 1-0 lead, and having a 1-1 tie heading into the fifth, the Vikings were unable to hold on as they gave up three and six runs in consecutive innings late in the defeat.
Sophomore Erica McNew led the way for CSU in the loss, picking up two of the team's five hits, as well as knocking a solo home run out of the park for the squad's only run in the third inning.
McNew is now second on the team in batting average (.342) and hits (13), and leads the Vikings in home runs with four.
In the pitcher's circle freshman Susan Knight pitched the majority of the afternoon for CSU, earning seven strikeouts while allowing four earned runs (seven total runs), on six hits in 5.1 innings of action. Junior Sara Shields also saw time on the mound, closing the game out for the Vikings.
Cleveland State will now head to Jackson, MS for six games over three days at Jackson State University. That stretch will begin with a double header vs. the host Lady Tigers this Thursday the 14th and continue through Saturday afternoon.
