CLEVELAND – Four non-conference matches against in-state opponents and seven total home matches highlight the 2019 Cleveland State women's soccer schedule announced by Vikings head coach Dallas Boyer on Monday.
"I think we have a good non-conference schedule to go along with our Horizon League schedule," said Boyer. "Especially introducing so many new faces to the program with our incoming freshmen and transfers. It will be a good opportunity to play a lot of people in that first half and then see where we are it to make another run at a Horizon League title."
The Vikings will face Kent State, Akron, Ohio and Miami (Ohio) of the Mid-American Conference during the non-conference season.
"I'm excited to continue the traditions and rivalries we have built up with the MAC schools," said Boyer.
Cleveland State will open the season with a pair of exhibition matches. The Vikings will travel to Buffalo on Aug. 12 before hosting Duquesne on Aug. 16 at Krenzler Field.
The Vikings will open the 2019 season at Kent State on Aug. 23 and will open the home portion of the regular season on Aug. 25 against Akron.
After road trips to Ohio (Aug. 30) and Miami (Ohio) (Sept. 1), Cleveland State will travel to San Antonio, Texas for a pair of matches. Cleveland State will face the host Roadrunners of Texas at San Antonio on Sept. 6 and conclude the trip with a meeting against Rice on Sept. 8.
"We wanted to continue our tradition of getting out of the region and it will be a fun weekend down in San Antonio against UTSA and Rice," Boyer said.
The Vikings return to Krenzler Field for non-conference meetings against Niagara (Sept. 12) and Canisius (Sept. 15) before opening Horizon League play at Green Bay on Sept. 20.
Cleveland State will face defending league champion Milwaukee on Sept. 28 in its Horizon League home opener, which kicks off a three-match homestand. The Vikings will face Youngstown State (Oct. 2) and Oakland (Oct. 6) to conclude the longest homestand of the season.
The Vikings will play four of its final four Horizon League matches on the road. Cleveland State will travel to Northern Kentucky (Oct. 12) and IUPUI (Oct. 19) before facing Detroit Mercy on Oct. 23 in the home finale.
Cleveland State will conclude the regular season with road matches at UIC (Oct. 26) and Wright State (Nov. 1).
Cleveland State is coming off of the best season in school history as the Vikings posted a school-record 11 wins during the 2018 campaign. Cleveland State finished second in the Horizon League with a 6-2-1 league record and advanced to the Horizon League Tournament match for the first time in program history.
"I think it will be the deepest roster we have ever had," Boyer added. "There is no clear delineation between the top third, the middle third and the bottom third. If everyone is fit and healthy I can see us playing an abnormal amount of players in some of those non-conference matches."
