VALPARAISO, Ind. - Cleveland State had its six match unbeaten streak end with a 2-1 setback at Valparaiso in a Horizon League match on Saturday night.
The match did not begin until 10:45 EST, more than two hours after it was originally supposed to start due to inclement weather in the area.
The Vikings fell to 7-5-1 overall and 1-1 in the Horizon League, while the Crusaders improved to 7-4-1 overall and 1-1 in league play.
Valparaiso took a 1-0 lead just 6:27 into the match on a goal from Jenny Fassbinder. The match stayed that way until CSU sophomore Vickie Havas evened the contest at 1-1 with her team-leading seventh goal of the season. It was her 12th career goal.
Sophomore Brittney Koester recorded the assist on the goal, feeding the ball to Havas at the top of the penalty area where Havas scored to the top right corner of the goal.
It was back and forth from there until Valparaiso's Morgan Manzke scored with just 2:34 to play in the match off an assist from Jordan Ryfiak who carried the ball down the sideline, sent a pass to the middle of the box where Manzke was able to finish to the far post.
CSU had a chance to tie the match with less than a minute to play, but a header by Allie Sieradzki was saved with 45 seconds left.
Sarah Wood made six saves for the Vikings, while Valparaiso's Kristen Manski also made six saves.
CSU is out of action until the Vikings host Milwaukee at Krenzler Field on Saturday (Oct. 12) at 7:00 p.m. It is part of a tripleheader for CSU athletics with the men's soccer team hosting Green Bay at 1:00 p.m. and the volleyball team entertaining Valparaiso at 4:00 p.m. in Woodling Gym.
